Creating commissioned paintings is a unique experience that blends personal expression with the vision of another. I'm starting on two new commissioned pieces, and I have a fresh wave of inspiration and rejuvenation!
Inspiration
Commissioned art is a dialogue between the artist and the client. For these two paintings, I started by having detailed conversations with the clients to understand their vision, preferences, and the emotions they wanted the artwork to evoke. This collaborative approach helped me connect deeply with the themes and gave me a clear direction.
This process reminds me how working with others can open new creative doors. It pushed me to explore ideas I might not have considered on my own, and that sense of discovery felt incredibly refreshing.
The clients reminded me that they were ok with waiting a little longer for the pieces and I think that took some of the pressure off of me.
Techniques
Both paintings involve a mix of traditional and experimental techniques. I wanted to concentrate on the pastel color scheme that they have requested and the textures that I like to add to my paintings.

I plan to experiment with mixed media elements, such as incorporating fine sand into the paint to add an earthy texture. I'm also beginning this one with a foam coil and gypsum paper.
Emotions
Working on these commissions is more than a technical exercise; it's an emotional journey.
I find myself more present and mindful during the process, appreciating the small moments of discovery and problem-solving. The challenge of meeting someone else’s expectations while staying true to my style is pushing me to grow as an artist.
Encouraging Your Own Creative Exploration
Whether you are an artist or someone who appreciates art, I encourage you to explore creativity in your own way. Commissioned art offers a unique opportunity to collaborate and bring personal stories to life through visual expression.
For artists, taking on commissions can be a powerful way to challenge yourself and connect with new perspectives. Embrace the process with openness and curiosity. Let each project teach you something new and inspire your next creation.
